Graciously Hosting Houseguests

As summer travel ramps up this season, and over the long-weekend summer holidays, you might find yourself hosting family or friends in your home.

We rounded up some of our favorite articles on hosting houseguests, from manners to perking up your decor.

Here are our favorite tips:

1."The most valuable thing you can give a guest is to tell them earnestly, 'I'm so glad you are here!''. I learned that from my wonderful mother-in-law and that's why I always felt comfortable and accepted in her home." - Mudhouse on Apartmenttherapy.com.

2. Extra Blankets (and some other ideas); nothing is worse than not being able to sleep at all in someone else's idea of "comfortably cool" as a guest. You might also consider: decent (clean!) sheets, an assortment of pillows to choose from, clean towels set out clearly for the guest, extra toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, blow dryer, water pitcher and cup by the bed, a guest's own stash of snacks in their room, alarm clock, bedside light, night stand, tissues, and information/permission on where to find other stuff in the house -- including breakfast stuff in case they get up earlier than you. (Adapted from Sherrybinnah on Apartmenttherapy.com.)

3. Clean and declutter your home. Make space physically and mentally, and make someone feel welcome by taking the time to clean at least the bathroom thoroughly. Try to declutter the guest space, and common rooms like the living room and kitchen; for example, clear your kitchen counter and a space in the guest room for them to put their things. Decluttering is good for you and your guest, you'll both find the visit more relaxing.

4. Special touches like a small inexpensive bouquet of fresh flowers (perhaps from your own yard?), a stack of magazines or books to read, a ribbon tied around a stack of fluffy guest towels, a turned down bed with a pretty throw, or a basket of extra toiletries can really make someone feel special and welcome. Consider providing something "extra" that is pretty, useful, or meaningful for your guest.
