How to Hang Art In Your Home

sketch
Tip: To get a higher-end look without professional framing, consider buying a ready made frame much larger that your art, and having an (inexpensive, $10-20) oversized white or off-white mat cut at a craft store or frame shop.

It's a "designer trick" to use big oversized frames and mats with your art, and it really makes a piece look special.  Creating the white space around the image add drama and visual space, which really highlight your art.

Now, how to hang (and what height):

1. Select the piece you would like to hang.

2. Eye-ball the wall space available in the chosen room and pick several locations where you think the piece might look best. Traditional wisdom is to hang large art 57 inches from the floor on center -- also consider slightly lower. Most people hang art too high!

Our instructions are below, but since then we stumbled upon a great article that has drawings of each step -- and if you're a visual learner you might want to skip right to this link!

3. Ask a friend or family member to help you by holding the piece up in those spots and at different heights while you move around the room and view it from different angles. Reverse places with your assistant and get her reaction as well.

4. Decide on a place and the height at which you want the canvas picture to be hung and, using a pencil, lightly mark the wall at the top of the piece.

5. Take a look at the back of your frame, and determine the distance below the top edge of the frame where you want your nail or picture hanger to be -- and mark the wall that distance down from your original mark.

6. For large or heavy art you may need two marks, use a level to draw another mark even with the first. You should now have two marks on an equal and straight line a few inches below where you want the top of your painting to be.

7. Hammer two long nails or picture hangers into your mark(s), making sure they enter the wall straight. If you're using simple nails, leave at least at half inch to an inch of the nail exposed to hang the picture on.

8. Using a clean white eraser, gently erase the pencil marks you made on the wall.

9. Pick up your picture and center the hanger on the back between the two nails. The nails should support the picture. (If you have very heavy or expensive art, always consult a professional framing gallery first!)

10. Step back and admire--you have hung your picture or canvas painting successfully.
